Our Dyslexia Team

  So how will we ensure that our students receive the best instruction possible and that students with dyslexia are identified and supported? With a team approach of course:) Tier 1 Team - Homeroom Teachers - Administrators The Tier 1 team will discuss and monitor instruction to ensure that all students are receiving explicit, systematic, and cumulative instruction in the key areas of the Five Pillars.  1. Phonological Awareness 2. Phonics 3. Morphology 4. Fluency 5. Vocabulary 6. Comprehension Data will be collected monthly to determine effectiveness.  The team is looking for a minimum 80% of students to show growth in order to determine Tier 1 effectiveness. Students who are not making efficient progress will be referred to Tiered instruction  and the MTSS-Dyslexia Team Interventions will be put in place at grade level.  Interventions will be aligned with student needs regarding phonics, morphology, phonemic awareness, fluency, or comprehension. Best Literacy Practices

 So what are best literacy practices for students who may have dyslexia?   Students with Dyslexia need a Structured Literacy Approach that focuses on these key area 1. Pholology 2. Sound-Symbol Association 3. Syllable Instruction 4. Morphology 5. Syntax 6. Semantics. In addition, these areas should be taught explicitly and systematically.   They should also be spiraled or cumulative. Common Misconceptions  regarding dyslexia Myth #1: Reading and writing letters backwards is the main sign of dyslexia. Myth #2: Dyslexia doesn’t show up until elementary school. Myth #3: Kids with dyslexia just need to try harder to read. Myth #4: Dyslexia goes away once kids learn to read. Myth #5: Dyslexia is a vision problem. Myth #6: Dyslexia only happens in the English language. Myth #7: Dyslexia is caused by not reading enough at home. What's Happening in Georgia?

  As of May 2019, Governor Kemp signed Senate Bill 48 into law. SB48 provides for identification of and support for students in kindergarten through third grade with dyslexia Per Senate Bill 48, beginning with the 2020-2021 school year, the State School Superintendent shall establish a three-year pilot program to demonstrate and evaluate the effectiveness of early reading assistance programs for students with risk factors for dyslexia. The Dyslexia Pilot Program consists of the following districts: Charlton County School District City Schools of Decatur Jackson County School District Marietta City Schools Muscogee County School District Ware County School District      After reading and listening to the video, what is the main goal of Senate Bill 48?  Why was it established?  Please respond in the comments and we will discuss in our small groups at the next meeting.
